Chooser

The Chooser tab is selected when HueVue first starts. With it you select and view images and add colors to your favorites list. You can also do a "quick compare" where you can quickly find out how a collection of colors relate to each other.

Select an Image

To select an image, either take a picture with the camera or choose an existing image from your library using the buttons on the left side of the lower button bar.

Display Color Names

Once you have selected a picture, HueVue will display the color name of any point you touch. These color names are selected from a color dictionary that contains 267 color names.

Select an Image Mode

Also on the lower button bar is the Image Mode button. It is set to Normal by default. By tapping on is button, you switch between the following display modes:

Normal - the unmodified image.

"Red" blind - simulate the vision of someone missing L-cones.

"Green" blind - simulate the vision of someone missing M-cones.

"Red" boost - enhance the L-cone component of the image.

"Green" boost - enhance the M-cone component of the image.

Since someone with a particular deficiency might be interested in a subset of the image modes, the modes that are cycled through when the Image Mode button is pressed can be selected in the Image Modes subpanel of the Settings tab.

When the display mode is not Normal, an alert symbol will be displayed to the right of the Image Mode button.

Boosting the L- or M- component of the image might help compensate for a weak cone response. Depending on the type and severity of color vision deficiency that someone has, the boost modes can help that person see a more "normal" image, or at least highlight what they're missing.

The Color Vision Deficiency Compensation subpanel of the Settings tab defines three parameters that determine how boost is applied to an image:

Boost - the L-component (red boost) or M-component (green boost) of the image is multiplied by this factor to create the boosted image.

The Limit and Scale parameters define how to deal boosted image values that fall outside the limits of the iPhone display. If Limit is set, individual pixel values that exceed the maximum RGB value are set to that value. If Scale is set, the entire image is modified to make it fit within the RGB limits.

Bottom line: your mileage may vary. You might want to play around with these settings and see what works best for you.

Add a Color

By choosing the "+" button on the upper left portion of the screen, you add a color to your favorites list and display the Color Detail page.

Quick Compare

The QC button, located on the upper right corner of the display, enables you to quickly select and compare a set of colors. After you click on the QC button, you use the Add button to choose a series of colors. When you're done, click the QC button again, and HueVue will compare the last color you selected with the other colors in the selection.

The QC will compare colors either to determine a closest match or which colors are a harmonious pairing. These functions are the same as those reached via the Closest and Harmonies buttons on the Color Detail page. By default, colors are compared to determine which are Closest. If you would like QC to compare Harmonies instead, change the Quick Compare setting on the Setting tab.
